The Art of Law, The Power of Trust

September 14, 2026

In an interview with Top 10 of Malaysia, Chris Chin Shang Yoon shares his journey of establishing and growing Shang & Co, and his approach to building a firm grounded in trust, collaboration and professional excellence.

Chris Chin Shang Yoon began his legal career in civil litigation, where he quickly learned the importance of mastering procedure, preparation and strategy. “I established Shang & Co. on 1 June 2011. The firm initially focused mainly on litigation. Over time, its practice developed further, particularly in family and matrimonial law, commercial disputes, employment, conveyancing, corporate agreements and related areas.”

“My own practice involves complex matrimonial and commercial disputes, including matters involving high-net-worth individuals, substantial assets, companies and family businesses. Clients’ legal issues may involve their businesses, wealth, family relationships, children and long-term interests. Shang & Co. aims to develop a strategy that is legally sound, practical and appropriate to what the client ultimately wants to protect.”

Shang & Co. combines specialist legal knowledge with an integrated approach to solving problems. “Different lawyers and partners within the firm specialise in different areas. My own practice develops particularly around family law and complex commercial disputes,” shares Chris. “A matrimonial dispute may involve company shares, family businesses, properties, investments and succession considerations. A commercial dispute may also have consequences for family wealth or business continuity. Hence, I have always encouraged our lawyers to work collaboratively to give the client the best solution. For significant and high-value matters, I remain involved in the overall strategy.”

Shang & Co. received the ALB Malaysia Law Awards recognition for Matrimonial and Family Law Firm of the Year in 2016, and Chris was recognisedin ALB’s 40 Under 40 in the same year. He was also later given opportunities to contribute to theprofession, including co-authoring a book on family law practice and serving as a judge for the ALB Malaysia Law Awards.

“Ultimately, resilience comes from maintaining strong fundamentals while remaining willing to change. Trust begins with being honest with the client. We have to manage expectations, explain weaknesses in a case or advise a client that continuing a dispute may not be in their best interests. Responsiveness is another important part of trust.” Therefore, Shang & Co. has adopted technology and developed an in-house system that helps provide clients with updates more efficiently and maintain transparency throughout the handling of their files.

Confidentiality is fundamental particularly in family law, where cases may involve private financial information, prominent individuals and children. “Protecting the identity, privacy and interests of the children can be especially important,” he says. “In a divorce involving a family business, for example, prolonged litigation may ultimately damage the very assets both parties are fighting over. Where children are involved, excessive conflict can also have consequences long after the legal proceedings end.”

As clients become more sophisticated, legal issues increasingly cross different areas of practice. “Family wealth may involve corporate structures, property and succession. Commercial disputes may involve cross-border considerations and complex ownership arrangements,” says Chris. “We therefore need lawyers who have deep expertise in their respective disciplines while still being capable of working collaboratively.”

Chris expects AI to become increasingly integrated into legal research, document preparation, workflow management and client communication. “Technology should be adopted if it improves the quality, accessibility or efficiency of the service we provide.”

“I believe leadership is about creating an environment where people can think independently, exercise judgment and take responsibility,” says Chris who believes that the challenge is to preserve the professional discipline required of a serious legal practice and the open, collaborative and human culture that he wanted to build from the beginning.

Chris’s journey demonstrates how legal expertise, integrity and adaptability can come together to build a practice that stands the test of time. At the heart of his approach is a firm belief that the practice of law is not simply about resolving disputes, but about understanding people, protecting what matters to them and helping them navigate life’s most important decisions. Through Shang & Co., he continues to build a firm where professional excellence is matched by trust, strategic thinking and a genuine commitment to clients, creating a lasting legacy in the practice of law.
