From Champion to Changemaker: Kelly Tan’s Inspiring New Chapter

July 14, 2026

As one of Malaysia’s most accomplished professional golfers, Kelly Tan continues to make her mark on the international stage as a regular competitor on the LPGA Tour. A two-time Olympian, she has proudly represented Malaysia at some of the world’s most prestigious tournaments while inspiring the next generation through youth golf clinics and mentorship initiatives. Beyond competition, Kelly also serves as a golf ambassador, championing the growth of the sport across Malaysia and Southeast Asia, further cementing her legacy both on and off the course. In an exclusive interview with Top 10 of Malaysia, Kelly reflects on the defining moments of her career, the challenges she has overcome and the experiences that have shaped her journey as one of the nation’s leading golfers.

As she wind down her touring career, the renowned golfer is gradually transitioning into coaching, determined to inspire and develop the next generation of Malaysian talent. It is a role she has embraced with the same passion that first brought her into the sport more than two decades ago.

“Seeing young golfers learn, improve and enjoy the game has been incredibly rewarding,” she says. “While I’m entering a different phase of my career, my passion for golf hasn’t changed. If anything, it’s become even stronger because I now have the opportunity to help inspire and develop the next generation of golfers.”

It is a fitting next chapter for someone whose own journey began with a simple introduction to the game by her father. Growing up, Tan loved sports, and golf quickly became more than just a hobby. At just 14 years old, she was selected to represent Malaysia in the national team, gaining invaluable exposure through international competitions that would shape both her character and her ambitions.

Those formative years taught her lessons that extended far beyond golf.

“I was raised to believe that hard work, discipline and humility are values that matter more than talent alone,” she reflects. “Golf constantly teaches patience and resilience. There are always good days and bad days, but my upbringing taught me to stay grounded, keep learning and never stop improving.”

That mindset would become the cornerstone of a career filled with remarkable milestones. At 19, Tan turned professional and secured her LPGA Tour card on her very first attempt—an achievement that few golfers accomplish. As one of a veteran on tour, she looks back with gratitude on a career that has taken her across the globe, introduced her to lifelong friendships and allowed her to compete against the very best in women’s golf.

Among those experiences, nothing compares to representing Malaysia at the Olympic Games.

For Tan, the Olympics symbolised far more than another tournament. Walking into the Olympic Village, surrounded by thousands of elite athletes from around the world, reinforced the significance of the occasion and the privilege of representing the country.

Yet the memory that remains closest to her heart came moments before her opening round.

“I could feel the nerves running through my body standing on the first tee,” she says. “But I reminded myself to embrace the moment because I knew I was experiencing something very few athletes ever get to experience. It was such an honour to represent Malaysia on that stage.”

Behind those proud moments, however, lies a reality often unseen by spectators. Professional golf is one of the most demanding individual sports, requiring athletes to shoulder every success and every disappointment alone. Week after week, players navigate constant travel, unfamiliar courses, intense competition and the emotional challenges that accompany elite sport.

Over the years, Tan has experienced both the highs of competing among the world’s best and the inevitable periods of self-doubt that accompany every athlete’s journey.

“What helped me overcome those challenges was learning to focus on what I could control rather than the outcome,” she explains. “I learned to trust the process, stay disciplined in my preparation and accept that setbacks are part of every athlete’s journey. Every difficult period taught me something that made me stronger, both as a golfer and as a person.”

Those lessons have become the foundation of her coaching philosophy. Beyond swing mechanics and technical ability, she hopes to equip young golfers with the confidence, resilience and mental strength needed to succeed both on and off the course.

For Tan, coaching is not about creating perfect golfers—it is about nurturing confident individuals who believe they can compete with the world’s best.

That belief also reflects how her definition of success has evolved. Early in her career, success meant winning tournaments, climbing the rankings and reaching milestones such as earning her LPGA Tour card. While those achievements remain meaningful, they no longer define her.

“Success is no longer determined solely by the numbers on my scorecard,” she says. “It’s about growth, resilience and making a positive impact on others through the game of golf. Looking back, I’m proud not only of what I’ve achieved, but also of the person golf has shaped me to become.”

As she looks to the future, Tan hopes to see more Malaysians embrace golf and believes the sport should be accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. More importantly, she dreams of helping nurture the country’s next generation of champions.

“If one day a Malaysian golfer reaches the LPGA Tour or represents our country at the Olympics, knowing I played a small part in that journey would be one of my proudest achievements,” she mentions.

For aspiring golfers, her advice is refreshingly honest. Success, she believes, is built long before tournament victories and podium finishes.

“People often see the tournaments, the travel and the achievements, but they don’t always see the countless hours of practice, the sacrifices and the resilience it takes,” she says. “Don’t compare your journey to someone else’s. Focus on becoming a little better each day, trust the process and never lose the love for the game.”

After spending more than a decade inspiring Malaysians through her own achievements, Kelly Tan is discovering that her greatest legacy may not be measured by trophies or rankings. Instead, it may be found in the young golfers she encourages, the confidence she builds and the dreams she helps turn into reality. As one chapter draws to a close and another begins, her impact on Malaysian golf is only set to grow.
