Selangor’s own Thalia Thin, who won the Miss Malaysia Tourism Queen of the Year 2016 title, has always admired pageant queens as a child. However, what caught her eye was not their beauty, but rather their confidence. In a recent interview with Top 10 of Malaysia, she talks about why she joined the pageant, her vision for the future and also the challenges faced throughout the competition.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” declares Thalia. According to her, beauty is more than just a pretty face – it is more important to have a loving heart, goodness of actions and deeds along with an inquisitive mind with a thirst for knowledge.

Despite achieving success in this beauty pageant, Thalia still places importance in her career. When asked where she sees herself 10 years from now, she answers, “I see myself owning a successful law firm while pursuing my other interests such as modelling.” She also wants to give back to the society, as she aspires to be an inspiration to others.

Thalia shares that the main reason she took part in this pageant was because she was passionate about introducing Malaysia to the world. She is also excited to learn about other cultures, and what the world has to offer.

In her spare time, Thalia enjoys dancing, singing, reading and playing dodgeball. Her biggest challenge during the pageant was walking around in high heels, because it was something relatively new to her. Besides that, she was never fond of public speaking. “A big challenge was not to panic when speaking in front of large audiences,” she says. However, she managed to overcome her difficulties by the end of the pageant.

Thalia considers her mom to be a real life superhero, as she tirelessly nudges her back on to the right path whenever she strays. “I was not an easy child to care for as I gave her countless sleepless nights, but she still sees me through until the very end. I hope to possess her qualities,” she says.

Looking back, she thinks all the finalists stood a fair chance of winning the title. However, Thalia believes that her good command of the English language, paired with her lively personality and her charisma was what gave her the edge over other finalists.

As for her advice to anyone wanting to join a beauty pageant, she encourages them not to be afraid to chase dreams. “Be true to yourself throughout the whole journey because confidence only comes when you are comfortable in your own skin.” She also reminds young girls to be open to criticism as that is how you can grow up as a person and learn to be the best you can be.
